Can you believe it? This is the last week of PE for the calender year. Our next week of PE will take place in the 2011!!!!! We reserve this week to play holiday games and various other favorite games before we head off for the holiday vacation. We will play games of The Grinch and Fitness Dreidels to name a few. I remarked last week about how cold the beginning of the week was and today it is even colder. We do live in Florida right? I wanted to wish everyone happy holidays! I hope you all get some rest and enjoy your time with your friends and family. See you all next year.

12/6 - 12/10

Wow! What a chilly start to our week. We are likely to be outside most of the week so please dress for the weather. It is always better to have to take off a few layers as the day warms up than not be prepared at all. Basketball is the theme for the week. 2nd-4th grades will be playing small-sided and modified basketball games to reinforce the skills taught and practiced last week. Games will include sideline basketball, knockout, P.I.G., around the world and small-sided games. Our K & 1st students will begin our week-long basketball unit. Our young students will learn the differences between bouncing and dribbling as well as shooting and passing. We look forward to the week ahead in physical education.

2nd Trimester of PE

Wow! I can’t believe that the second trimester is already here. Each trimester our students have been and will be taught primarily by one of our three PE coaches. This trimester I will have the pleasure of teaching the students of Mrs. Vigue, Mrs. Whitecage, Mrs. McKenzie, Mrs. Mitchell, Ms. Lemon’s and Ms. Telemachos’ boys only. As with the previous trimester, at least one day a week will be reserved for a large group game or rotation of games. During these days all students will receive instruction from all three PE coaches. My classes will begin the second trimester with our kickball unit. Our younger students will play modified games that emphasize kicking and base running skills. 2nd -4th grade students will play actual games of kickball/tee-ball/softball with a major focus on the rules and strategy of the game. We look forward to an equally exciting trimester in physical education.

Floor Hockey

This week's unit is floor hockey in the Crisp Gym. Classes will be introduced to hockey fundamentals and skills appropriate for each grade level. Skills will include proper grip, dribbling, passing, trapping and small games. Safety is always a concern, so we use molded foam hockey sticks and safe training style pucks. We look forward to a great week ahead and Friday's spook-tacular Fall Festival.

Time to S.N.A.G.!

Students will participate in the S.N.A.G. golf program this week in Coach Every’s PE classes. SNAG is an acronym for (Starting New At Golf) it also refers to the Velcro targets and felt tennis balls used for the program. The putters called Rollers are made of plastic and are much larger than a normal putter. The only other club the students will be using is called the Launcher, the equivalent of a pitching wedge but it is much lighter and larger. The unit will consists of putting and chipping lessons for the younger students and our 4th graders will add on the skills of pitching, the full swing and play out a few holes using the SNAG targets on our field. This unit is always exciting for our students and provides a great introduction to game as well as reinforcing the fundamentals of real golf. This week is sure to be a hole-in-one!

Coach Every’s is so excited that the Rays and Bucs both won big games this weekend. Coach Every and Coach D were both out on last Friday for our big PE conference. We had a great time learning new games and ideas that we are going to use in our classes. We even met the most accomplished female golfer in history, Annika Sorenstam, it was very exciting for both of us. Coach Every’s Kindergarten and First grade classes will be playing loco-motor and fitness games this week. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade classes will play tee ball and softball. Go Rays!!!!!!!

It’s hip to be square, 4 – Square that is!

Coach Every’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students will learn and play the game of 4 – Square. We will learn all the skills and tactics involved within this great playground game. An integral component to the game is the adherence to all the rules and conflict resolution. Our students learn strategies that help them referee their own games democratically and fairly.

Our Kindergarten and First Grade students will head back into the Mini-Gym to work on another round of our motor development program. Tracking and catching will be a constant focus throughout the week.

Congratulations to Kyle L. for receiving the 1st Sportsmanship Award of the year!

A Break in the Weather, I hope...

Our first full week of PE was quite wet here at Shorecrest. Luckily we have plenty of available indoor space and were even able to get up to the Crisp Gym a few times. This week our plan is to move forward with our delayed kickball unit with grades 2-4. Our focus will be on the rules and strategy of the game. The Kindergarteners and First graders will play modified versions of kickball games with a focus on the progression of kicking, from stationary to a moving ball. Fielding and teamwork skills will also be reinforced.
